What is a ‘multi-disciplinary’ therapy team and what are the benefits?

A multi-discplinary therapy team basically means that there are multiple people with different skill sets who can meet different areas of someone’s health needs.

When you have your house built, you don’t just employ a single-handed builder, you employ a building team such as a plumber, an electrician, a gas engineer, brick layer and so on.

In healthcare for example you’d see a nurse for a minor problem, but a GP or Consultant for a more serious health problem or a Pharmacist if you have a minor cold. These people are all necessary, beneficial and have a role to play in keeping people well and healthy. You wouldn’t want access to just one of them, you benefit from having access to all of them.

Multi-disciplinary working is gold standard for great health and therapy care outcomes and luckily with our background experience, we are used to working in a team and it something we are proud of and enjoy being part of. Our professional bodies such as the Health and Care Professions Council, Royal College of Occupational Therapy and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy all recognize the benefits of working collaboratively and we are expected to work together with other professionals as part of our role. However, for some clinicians working by themselves, it can make collaboratively working more difficult, not knowing where to turn for advice or brain storming about a client with complex needs. But not for us!

What we love about our fantastic team’s working approach here is that at Reclaim Mobility we can optimise the skills and experience of our different staff and problem solve best possible treatments, discuss up to date research, evidence and resources to be able to give our clients the best possible service.

Our Physiotherapist’s are experts when it comes to movement for example, whether it’s your balance, strength, or mobility that’s causing you trouble. However, our Occupational Therapists are experts at engaging the client in meaningful activities and finding ways to overcome these (movement) challenges in terms of finding equipment options, finding alternative strategies etc. Then we have our Speech and Language Therapists and Psychology services which mean we can support your communication and emotional needs as well. Then we can work on joint goals together as one team, who share the same systems of communication/notes systems so that your therapy needs are fluid and seamless.

If you think you’d like to explore a multi-disciplinary therapy service and what we can do for you or your loved one, then we are always happy to chat through your individual case to discuss your bespoke needs.
